Vodafone informeert over maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen

November 2012

In this second newsletter you can read about the steps Vodafone has taken this last quarter regarding sustainability. To me the final of the Mobiles for Good Challenge was a personal highlight. Six teams, each with great ideas on how mobile technology contributes to the health and wellbeing of people, competed for the three first prizes. One of the winners, Amplino, will develop a mobile malaria tester with which doctors can diagnose within 45 minutes instead of 30 days. This means the number of casualties of malaria will significantly decrease. It is wonderful to see what you can achieve thanks to the use of mobile technology!

  Eco-score embraced around the world

The eco-score, developed by Vodafone Netherlands, is now being used in eight different countries, amongst with New Zealand and Australia. This sustainability label for mobile phones is shown in all direct consumer channels of Vodafone Netherlands since December 1, 2011. There are positive discussions with other mobile providers in The Netherlands to use the eco-score as well. Both the method and the communication of the eco-score are continuously being improved.
We have done research among customers and organized a stakeholderdialogue. Read the notes here. Naturally we would also like to know your thoughts on the eco-score. Please join our discussion on Vodafone's Forum.

  Innovation contest for health sector

On September 17 the Vodafone Foundation and Waag Society have announced the winners of the 'Mobiles for Good Challenge' during the PICNIC festival in Amsterdam. This contest was organised to promote mobile technology as a mean to improve the healthcare and wellbeing. The three winners each receive 40,000 euro, office space in Amsterdam and professional coaching to market their concept double quick. The first team develops the first malaria tester on the go, which decreases the testing of malaria from three weeks to 45 minutes.
The second team, with among others a surgeon from the Amsterdam Medic Hospital, improves the guidance of elderly by developing a hospitality app. The third team gives people their voice with the development of a speech app. The winners were chosen out of 73 applications.   Vodafone donates 2500 volunteer hours

Vodafone employees are allowed to spend a working day on volunteering every year. The enthusiasm is enormous en therefore we launched a new volunteer platform (together with Nederland Cares), with even more activities than before. Almost every day new activities are offered, ranging from walking with elderly people in nursing homes and organising a short internship at the office for the youth out of disadvantaged neighbourhoods to renovating a petting. We strive for the realisation of 2,500 hours this year. Under the motto "When was the last time you made someone smile?" we convince our colleagues to sign up as volunteer.
