Vodafone informeert over maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen

Febuary, 2013

While texting colliding into a stationary truck resulting in damaged teeth. This happened to the son of one of our colleagues. Every day parents call our service desk, because they or their children experienced something bad related to the handset. Think about bullying through the phone or getting high invoices after playing online games. Naturally we want to do something about this. And that is why we started a round table conversation and a "Parent Panel" consisting of employees with children to discuss the risks and possible solutions concerning mobile use by children. During the year we also visited 10 families and we involved stakeholders in the development of specific services for parents. Last November we invited those stakeholders again for an expert session, where experts with various backgrounds discussed about digital parenting, screen time and digital manners. During this session we presented our new program Connecting Children Safely. With this program we want to support parents, so their children can safely and responsibly use mobile telephony. Of course we cannot prevent everything and it is better to wait with texting until you are somewhere where there is no chance of colliding into stationary trucks.

If you would like to react on our new program Connecting Children Safely or any of our other sustainability activities, please contact us via email. Thanks in advance!

Many Dutch hand in their old cellphones during 3FM Serious Request

serious requestDuring the 3FM Serious Request week Vodafone collected with the action #MobileRequest over 30,000 old cellphones. The total value of the thousands donated phones has been donated to the Red Cross. With the returns the Red Cross fights against the unnecessary death of more than 5.5 million babies during or in the first month after delivery. Every donated cellphone - old, broken or incomplete - is worth money and contributed to the action of radiostation 3FM and the Red Cross. Two examples: with the returns of a ten year old cellphone a baby can be medically examined after delivery (weight and TBC-vaccination). When someone donated a three year old smartphone, the Red Cross could use the returns of this phone to supply a clinic with medical instruments for hygienic deliveries. On the website www.mobilerequest.nl was started, where you could find the actual returns per phone. Vodafone makes sure all of the 30,000 phone will be re used in developing countries or will be recycled professionally.

  Connecting Children Safely

Often kids do not use their smartphones in a responsible manner and are not always aware of the safety risks, such as loss of the phone, watching unsuited websites, high phone bills and cyber bullying. That is something they have to learn and parents play an important role in this process. Vodafone supports both parents and children via the program Connecting Children Safely, which was launched in November during the Nationale Ouderavond. On the platform Vodafone.nl/kinderen we offer information, social media manuals and supporting tools. We also refer parents to relevant organisations, who can help them with e.g. parental issues.

  Child Safety Sim
As part of Connecting Children Safely Vodafone offers a
Child Safety Sim, meant for children between 8 and 12 years old. With this sim parents can control the use of credits, who their child is allowed to call and how long it is allowed to be online. Furthermore parents can decide which safety applications they would like to use since they know their own child best.

On November 23 Nikki Plessen announced the four winners of the yearly World of Difference-contest. Out of almost 500 applications Gerhard Brink, Kim Nooij, Nieke Kempen and Lotte Bierhuizen are chosen as winners. In the next year they will be working as projectteam on a mobile application to educate 5,000 adolescents in North Ghana about sex and health. In this country teen pregnancies, STD's and HIV are a major problem. Over 20% of the teenage girls in North Ghana is pregnant or already has a child. The biggest problem is the lack of proper information and knowledge about sex and health. Through their mobile phones these adolescents can receive the proper information. You can follow the stories of the World of Difference winners on www.worldofdifference.nl of via facebook

Vodafone participates in the pilot social conditions at tenders of MVO Nederland. It is about tenders in which social aspects of the own company as well as the production chain will be part of the contractual obligations. Goal of the pilot is to give feedback on this to the government and to share the learning experiences with other companies.
