Creating opportunities for sustainable living & working

October, 2013

A lot of people asked me as CSR manager at Vodafone whether I had seen the short video about the Dutch designer Dave Hakkens at DWDD. This hit on YouTube is watched over more than 15 million times within two weeks. The video shows the idea of extending the economic lifespan of a mobile phone, so every part of the phone is interchangeable. Last year at the Future Leader event of MVO Nederland a winning pitch was presented with a similar idea: the lego-phone. This fits in the thought of circular economy: every raw material, semi-finished products and end products could and should be reused. We are great supporters of this idea and we offered our (international) help to the team of phonebloks. In this newsletter you can read how sustainability, innovation and business operations go hand in hand. According to us, this is the only way to really make a change.

A safe internet for kids with a smartphone

Safety NetMany children of 12 years or older have a smartphone, with which they can access the digital world at any time and every place they want. Parents often worry about what their children can face on the internet, like porn, violence and gambling games. Vodafone offers a solution by adding a safe browsing functionality to the Vodafone Safety Net app. With this app, children with an Andriod smartphone have no access to websites with content that is not suitable or even harmful for them. As first operator in The Netherlands Vodafone offers a safe browsing option for (Andriod) smartphones. Recently, we discussed this topic with Joel Voordewind, parliamentarian of the Christen Unie, who called for a block on porn. Next to blocking the access of websites with unsuitable content, the Vodafone Safety Net app helps against bullying and unwanted contacts, excessive use, spreading unwanted images and getting a hold on costs. The Vodafone Safety Net app is part of our Child Safety program.

  'Climate problem solved by Vodafone'

M2M technologieThis prestigious headline will never be well substantiated, but there is an underlying truth. The ICT-sector is responsible for more than two percent of the worldwide energy use, but could realize a saving of twenty percent of the worldwide energy use. By applying all kinds of solutions like the smart meter, the soft drinks machine which shows when the drinks need to be refilled, smart buildings or the smart trashcans. These solutions are enabled by Vodafone's machine to machine (M2M) technology. As one of the largest mobile-telecom companies of the world Vodafone has made this technology into one of the three strategic innovation areas. Vodafone Netherlands has a market share of more than fifty percent. Through case studies we will show the economic and societal value of this technology.

The new edition of World of Difference started

World of Difference Contributing to the health and wellbeing of people with mobile communication technology, around the world. That is what we want to achieve with the World of Difference program. This year four ambitious, engaged young professionals have a chance to work in Kenya. Submission is until November 1st 2013. The goal of the project is to reach at least 15.000 young people in Kenya directly and inform them about how they can protect themselves against HIV and where they can get a HIV-test. Our partners dance4life and IICD make HIV and aids discussable and want to break taboos. Especially youngsters under the age of 25 have more risk because they have a lack of receiving good information. A big group of Kenyans can be reached with mobile technology and bring back the amount of HIV-infections.
