Creating opportunities for sustainable living & working

January, 2014

Vodafone published an Integrated Report for the first time last year, in which we combined information on our financial as well as economic, social and environmental goals and performance. The Report was hardly a week old when we put our heads together to discuss improvements for the coming year. We have the ambition to align more to the demands and wishes of our customers, employers and other stakeholders. We listen carefully to our environment and take all the feedback on our strategy and report in to consideration. We decided to pro-actively contact stakeholders to receive more in depth information on their expectations and this resulted in eye opening statements. Besides stakeholder involvement it is an important challenge for us to embed “Integrated Thinking” and work together towards a sustainable business. One of the aligned projects is the ”Integrated Reputation Management Program” of Vodafone of which sustainability is an important driver. We are proud that this resulted in winning the first National Reputation Award!

Sustainability is more than reporting and reputation. Please read in this newsletter about WIJS magazine and our contribution to the Vodafone Instant Network in the Philippines and more.

‘WIJS de online wereld in’ is launched

Safety NetMobile technology offers opportunities , but there are risks too. Together with the Mijn Kind Online Foundation, Digibewust and Mediawijzer.net we launched ' WIJS de online wereld in ’ magazine. Klaske de Jonge, Director Corporate Affairs: "As a mother of two children and as a director at Vodafone I think it is important that we make mobile internet fun and educational, but also safe and secure. We as adults have to help them to become more wise with media." WIJS helps parents and educators with this challenge by providing expert advice and helps children to explore the online world. In addition, the magazine contains advice, tips and tools, do’s and don’ts and checklists. The magazine is available free of charge at all Vodafone and BelCompany shops and as an online magazine.

Vodafone helps with Instant Network after Typhoon in the Philippines

WinnaarsWithin 24 hours after Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, two Vodafone teams were on their way to the disaster area to build a Vodafone Instant Network This Instant Network has been offering a solution for these kind of emergency situation since two years. The typhoon destroyed the network in the Philippines with the result that people could not let their loved ones know they were alive. Getting primary help on location is most important in emergency situations but quickly after that comes a need to get in touch with loved ones. The need to communicate was huge. Once fully running, 1.000 text messages were sent per minute and 20.000 phone calls were made a day. The local Philippine population even brought their own fuel to keep the generator running. The Vodafone Instant Network is still in use after The Vodafone Foundation handed over the responsibility to SMART, a local mobile operator.
